Diamond carat weight measures how much a diamond weighs. A metric ‘carat’ is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. This allows very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. The greater the carat weight, the rarer a diamond usually is.  

Clarity

Describes the presence of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external) in a diamond. These characteristics are typically growth marks, breaks, or other minerals trapped within or on the surface of a diamond. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (no internal or external characteristics) to Included (obvious characteristics that affect beauty and durability).  

Color

Refers to the absence of colour in colourless diamonds. The colour scale runs from D to Z. As the letters progress toward Z, the colour grade goes from colourless to near-colourless to faint yellow, then very light yellow and finally light yellow. The closer the diamond is to D (colourless), the rarer it will be – and more expensive, if all other factors are equal.  

Cut

Describes how the proportions of the diamond’s facets influence its face-up appearance, and how successfully a diamond interacts with light to create desirable visual effects such as brightness, fire and sparkle. The cut of a diamond includes not only the proportions, but also how well the stone has been polished and how symmetrical it is.
